Witch Hunt

Stephen Watt

Misguided, the rabble clamour for heads
on spikes, incensed by the imprecise
words offered by a journalist, or worse –
a celebrity whom they like.

………….#uglyduckling
………….#disgusting

Sticks and stones and mobile phones,
usernames will never hurt me.
Screengrabs, hashtags and blocking trolls,
………….never playing dirty.

Torches are lit by laptop screens,
led by social media throngs
swarming towards
………….wrong conclusions:
……………………the Boston bombs,
……………………the sexted images,
……………………flash cards – Amanda Todd,
.                               the sexual preferences,
………….issues with weight,
issues with self-esteem,
issues with education,
issues with speech.

Regardless if one sinks or swims,
no-one wins except the search engines
carrying your name on Microsoft
………….so step back, sign out
………….and switch that computer off.
